WWI Diorama with Rain Effects
The diorama represents a scene from the First World War. It was built using a kit from HF Sigilla. The 54 mm figures come from the kit, while the mortar base was scratch-built.
From the modeler's workshop: How a tarpaulin was made
The tarpaulin was made from disposable tissues. The tissues were soaked in diluted Wikol glue and shaped to resemble a real tarpaulin. After drying, they were painted with Tamiya primer spray. After painting, Sidolux wood finish was applied to obtain the effect of a wet fabric.
From the modeler's workshop: How rain was made
The rain was made of very thin fishing line and cyanoacrylate glue, which are visible in the photos in the form of tiny droplets. The water splashes on the ground are made of transparent silicone.
17 cm mortar
The mortar shown in the photos had a caliber of 17 cm (6.69 in) and a 64.6 cm (25.43 in) barrel. It was used by the Germans from the beginning of World War I. A version with a longer barrel (76.5 cm - 30.12 in) was introduced in 1916.
The mortar weighed 465 kg (1,025 lb), and its projectile weighed 50 kg (110 lb). Its firing range was 300 to 1,600 meters (325-1,750 yd).
